Home-based Monitoring of Motor Complication Severity in Parkinson’s Disease
5:00 PM PST
Online Meeting
Speaker: Behnaz Ghoraani
Meetings are free and open to the public. Register at: www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2020-11-emb
Overview
Parkinson’s
disease is among chronic diseases that occur more frequently as people age. Parkinson’s
disease affects over six million globally with estimated costs of about
$24,000 per patient, resulting in a total cost of over $20 billion per year
in the US, and these numbers are predicted to double by 2040. Both healthcare
delivery and quality of life can be improved considerably for the millions of
patients afflicted by these debilitating diseases by translating patients’
data into clinically actionable information to help the treating physician to
optimize the therapeutic interventions according to each patients’ disease
dynamics. In this talk, Dr. Ghoraani will present her team’s novel
engineering solutions to address the need for individualized therapeutic
approaches in Parkinson’s disease. Specifically, Dr. Ghoraani will present
her team’s progress toward developing new data analytics tools that can be
used along with wearable sensors to monitor patient-specific,
response-to-medication of patients with Parkinson’s disease at their natural
environment.
About the
Speaker
Dr. Behnaz Ghoraani is an Associate
Professor and the founder and director of the Biomedical Signal and Image
Analysis lab at the Department of Computer & Electrical Engineering at
Florida Atlantic University (FAU). Before joining FAU, she was an Assistant
Professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering (2012-2016). Dr.
Ghoraani serves as a reviewer for several journals and international
conferences, as well as national and international grant agencies. She is the
Associate Editor of BioMedical Engineering OnLine (BMEO) Journal. Dr.
Ghoraani has also been active in professional societies, serving as the Chair
of the Young Professionals Committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society,
the Associate editor of the IEEE Signal Processing Newsletter, coordinator of
IEEE Canada Women in Engineering (WIE), chair of IEEE Toronto WIE, and
vice-chair of IEEE Toronto Signal Processing Section, in addition to serving
as a program committee member and technical program coordinator for several
IEEE conferences including IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology
Conference (EMBC) 2020 and IEEE Life Sciences 2019, '18.
Dr.
Ghoraani’s research has primarily focused on generating clinically relevant
engineering solutions to tackle significant bottlenecks in data analytics
with an emphasis on computer-aided clinical decision making, long-term and
continuous health monitoring, remote and personalized therapeutic management,
non-stationary and multidimensional signal analysis, adaptive signal feature
extraction, and traditional and deep learning machine learning. Her research
received the best paper awards of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and
Biology Society in 2016 and the Gordon K. Moe Young Investigator Award in
2015. Dr. Ghoraani has over 70 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers,
one book, two book chapters, and two patents. Her research has been funded by
research grants from the National Institute of Health, National Science
Foundation including NSF CAREER award in 2020, and Florida Department of
Health.

Video Playlists
Buenaventura
Section is compiling short YouTube video playlists to get pre-university
students and their parents excited about engineering:
• DIY
Robots!
• Home
Electricity
• Magnets!
•
Rockets!
Please
help: If you have a STEM topic of interest or a playlist of your own, please
contact Karl Geiger, kgeiger@ieee.org.
Ideally,
playlists start with simple, possibly do-it-yourself demonstrations and
models students can do, then expand to show exciting possibilities and
implications. Any STEM subject is applicable and especially those in the
several fields IEEE's professional societies represent. Suggestions from
those with school-age children are especially important. Feedback from
students, teachers, and parents about the current playlists is welcome too.
We
look forward to hearing from you!
