Sampling an Asteroid to Understand the Birth of Our Planet
5:00 PM PDT
Online

Speaker: Tim McCoy
Register at www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2021-04-mtt

Overview

Discover how we sampled an asteroid — and what we hope to learn when the samples return to Earth.

Last year, NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission accomplished something not done in nearly 50 years by a U.S. space mission — sampling the surface of another planetary body for return to Earth. In this talk, you'll hear about the 15 year odyssey of proposing, building, and launching OSIRIS-REx, leading up to a year-long orbital mission and the moment OSIRIS-REx sampled the surface of asteroid Bennu. As we wait for the return of these samples in 2023, you’ll hear from Smithsonian geologist Tim McCoy about how these samples may hold the key to understanding the formation of Earth, providing the raw materials for life and oceans.

This program will be presented with live closed captioning.

The ABCs of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM)

On 18 March and 25 March 2021, Dr. Bernard Sklar gave a two-part talk to the Communications Society Chapter on “The ABCs of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM)”.

The main benefit of OFDM is its ability to cope with severe multipath channel conditions without the need for complex equalization filters. How does it accomplish this? The short answer: by “dividing and conquering.” It partitions a high-data-rate signal into smaller low-data-rate signals so that the data can be sent over many low-rate sub-channels.

Dr. Sklar has graciously agreed to let us share the recordings and slides from his talks. Links are on our web site at www.ieee-bv.org/sklar-ofdm/

We also have created a YouTube playlist of all of our Communications Society talks.
