From Idea to Scale: How Hub101 Is Developing Entrepreneurs and Launching
Startups
6:00 PM PDT
Online
Speaker: Kristin Bell
Register at www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2021-07-ent
Overview
Hub101 is a coworking
space, incubator, and community dedicated to supporting entrepreneurs.
In this event, Hub101 Community Manager, Kristin Bell, will
share how Hub101 enables entrepreneurs to bring their ideas to life and
ultimately build and scale businesses. She will share how Hub101 serves
startups, including collaboration through coworking, discovery through
educational programs, growth through mentorship, and community building
through events. One of the incubator’s newest programs is a 12-week,
cohort-based program that takes entrepreneurs from an idea, through
validation and development, to launch. Kristin will also highlight various
startups who launched out of Hub101, including those who closed tens or
hundreds of millions in fundraising, who found their technical co-founders,
who received mentorship that changed their trajectories, who secured
substantial partnerships, and more. Finally, Kristin will discuss the immense
value mentors and advisors bring to an entrepreneur’s journey and the various
ways our network of mentors support our programs with their Give First
mindset — the most critical ingredient in a vibrant, resilient startup
community.
Hub101 is located in Westlake Village and managed under
California Lutheran University’s Steven Dorfman Center for Innovation and
Entrepreneurship.

Surviving Disasters – Being Part of the Solution, Not the Problem
7:00 PM PDT
Online
Speaker: Ross Kocen
Register at www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2021-07-surviving
Overview
We should not count on the readily available electricity
supply, gas, mobile communications, water, and food during disasters. Yet,
our survival and escape plans take most of these for granted. In this talk,
Ross Kocen shares his reflections from being first on the scene as disasters
strike, discusses unforeseen challenges faced by businesses, families, and
individuals during catastrophic times, and invites us to re-engineer our
strategies to support business continuity daily life.
About the Speaker
Ross Kocen, NREMT, BSEE, MBA, Course Director First on Scene Training, is on the
board of BICEPP (Business Industry Council for Emergency Planning and
Preparedness); he is the President of the Valley Coastal Chapter of the ASSP
(American Society of Safety Professionals). He has been a National Registry
EMT (NREMT) since 2004. In addition to the medical training, he has completed
the NAEMSE 40-hour Instructor Course. Since college, Ross has been involved
in pre-hospital care when he worked on Fire Rescue Squad for Bridgehampton
Raceway. He completed an intensive Fire/Rescue course in extrication. Ross is
a third-party provider of health & safety courses from the American Heart
Association, American Red Cross, and Emergency Safety Care Institute. Ross is
a PADI Rescue Diver and an active member of Ventura County Medical Reserve
Corp. and the Thousand Oaks DART (Disaster Assistance Response Team).

Ransomware: Impact and State in 2021
6:00 PM PDT
Online
Speaker: Dhruv Pandya
Register at www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2021-07-cs
Overview
Ransomware is an ever-evolving form of malware designed to
encrypt files on a device, rendering any files and the systems that rely on
them unusable. Malicious actors then demand ransom in exchange for
decryption. Ransomware actors often target and threaten to sell or leak
exfiltrated data or authentication information if the ransom is not paid.
With it's surge in 2020 and 2021, it is prudent to understand some
background, patterns, and current statistics related to Ransomware. We will
also discuss its effects on major corporations, governments, and an average
citizen.
About the Speaker
Dhruv Pandya
is an information security specialist at a leading market research firm. He
holds a master’s degree in computer science and a Bachelor of Engineering in
Computer Engineering. He believes that learning is a perennial process. His
master's thesis included a research contribution to the SoCal High Technology
Task Force. As a computer engineer and an evolving computer scientist, Dhruv
has a strong background in Information Security Governance, Digital
Forensics, Vulnerability Management, Risk Management and Cryptography.

Electrical Vehicles (EV) Technology and its Implications on Climate Change
6:00 PM PDT
Online
Speaker: Momin Quddus
Register at www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2021-07-ev
Overview
California will phase out gasoline-powered cars by 2035
joining 15 countries that have built a roadmap to boost technical innovation
toward a zero-emission transportation and develop regulations to accelerate
the transition from fossil fuel vehicles to electrical vehicles. From a
sustainable engineering perspective, an electrical vehicle will emit less
greenhouse gas at the car/truck level but the benefit on climate change
involves a large array of additional factors. Momin Quddus, speaker, will
present an overview of the EV technology and its place in achieving
sustainable future for humanity. He will discuss the future of EVs and their
implication in slowing down global warming and climate change. In addition,
he will touch on interest on EV in the financial markets.
About the Speaker
Momin Quddus, IEEE Sr. Member, is the Section Chair
of the IEEE Buenaventura Section. Mr. Quddus works at NASA JPL in Radar Science Section. He
has worked in Avionics, Wireless communication, and Aerospace industries for
over 30 years. Momin holds a patent on wireless antenna design. He received
BSEE degree from University of Texas and MSEE degree from Florida Atlantic
University. He is a PE. He is interested in analyzing topics in terms of
economics and analytics. Momin enjoys playing tennis, field hockey and
soccer. He coaches youth sport teams. He volunteers at youth outreach events
such as Science fair & Academic Decathlon.

Volunteers Needed: IEEE Buenaventura Fall STEM Event for
Girls
“Girls Make STEM with Heart”, the IEEE Buenaventura fall
STEM event for middle-school girls, will be on Saturday, October 9 at
La Reina High School in Thousand Oaks. If you were involved in the 2019
event, you know what a wonderful experience it was for the students, parents,
and volunteers. If you were not involved, here is some background:
• Over 100 students attended eight different workshops
covering programming, chemistry, electronics modules, robotics, solar energy,
virtual reality, and wearables.
• We had at least two mentors per workshop. Each student was able to
get plenty of attention.
• Parents attended a separate program that covered topics such as
careers in STEM, how the young brain develops, and cybersecurity.
• At the end of the day, students got to show what they learned to
their parents.
• La Reina graciously let us use their classrooms and cafeteria. Each classroom
is equipped with a computer projector, movable tables and chairs, and Wi-Fi
connectivity.
• Lunch and materials are provided by IEEE.
• See our Facebook page for photos and videos of the
2019 event.
Planning for this year’s event is going on now. If you
are interested in volunteering, please contact us at stem2021@ieee-bv.org
