Disentangling What Changes Our Forests
Actional Science to Protect Wild Spaces

Speaker: Joan Dudney
Register at www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2021-08-forests

Overview

Dr. Joan Dudney tackles important questions: What impacts our natural systems locally and globally? How are humans shaping the disturbances experienced in our forested systems? How does severe drought impact various ecosystems, from mixed conifer to subalpine forests? Dr. Dudney seeks to answer these questions through various field-and lab-based approaches. She conducts research in many terrestrial ecosystems, including grasslands, mixed conifer, and high elevation forests, disentangling the complexity of an array of drivers such as infectious disease, pest outbreaks, invasive plants, and climate change.

About the Speaker

Joan Dudney, Ph.D. is a Davis H. Smith Postdoctoral Fellow based at UC Davis in the Latimer Lab. She earned a Doctorate in Environmental Science, Policy and Management at UC Berkeley. She has been awarded various some of the most prestigious fellowships in her field, including the National Science Foundation GRF and the Switzer Fellowship. Her work stands out for combining novel methodological approaches with long-term observational and experimental data to decode the complex, interacting, and often nonlinear relationships between plant communities and global change drivers, including pests, pathogens, drought, and fire.

Extreme Drought: Modeling the Risks of Climate Variability
7:00 PM PDT
Online

Speaker: Samantha Stevenson
Register at www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2021-09-drought

Overview

Dr. Samantha Stevenson’s research goals relate to understanding how large-scale climate variability responds to changes in climate, how we can improve our inferences of those changes using paleoclimate archives, and using that information to improve the representation of climate variability in climate models.  In this talk, Dr. Stevenson will share what extreme weather models reveal about megadrought events.

About the Speaker

Dr. Samantha Stevenson is an assistant professor in the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at UC Santa Barbara, where she studies climate change impacts on the tropical Pacific and drought in the southwest US using a combination of ocean and climate models, field observations, and paleoclimate "proxy" reconstructions. She is also affiliated with the Interdepartmental Graduate Program in Marine Sciences, and collaborates closely with the UCSB Geography Department. Prior to this she was a project scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and was an NSF Ocean Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Hawaii-Manoa Department of Oceanography working with Brian Powell.  She completed her PhD at the University of Colorado-Boulder’s Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Department.

Volunteers Needed: IEEE Buenaventura Fall STEM Event for Girls

“Girls Make STEM with Heart”, the IEEE Buenaventura fall STEM event for middle-school girls, will be on Saturday, October 9 at La Reina High School in Thousand Oaks. If you were involved in the 2019 event, you know what a wonderful experience it was for the students, parents, and volunteers. If you were not involved, here is some background:

•  Over 100 students attended eight different workshops covering programming, chemistry, electronics modules, robotics, solar energy, virtual reality, and wearables.
•  We had at least two mentors per workshop. Each student was able to get plenty of attention.
•  Parents attended a separate program that covered topics such as careers in STEM, how the young brain develops, and cybersecurity.
•  At the end of the day, students got to show what they learned to their parents.
•  La Reina graciously let us use their classrooms and cafeteria. Each classroom is equipped with a computer projector, movable tables and chairs, and Wi-Fi connectivity.
•  Lunch and materials are provided by IEEE.
•  See our Facebook page for photos and videos of the 2019 event.

Planning for this year’s event is going on now. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us at stem2021@ieee-bv.org
