Extreme Drought: Modeling the Risks of Climate Variability
7:00 PM PDT
Online

Speaker: Samantha Stevenson
Register at www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2021-09-drought

Overview

Dr. Samantha Stevenson’s research goals relate to understanding how large-scale climate variability responds to changes in climate, how we can improve our inferences of those changes using paleoclimate archives, and using that information to improve the representation of climate variability in climate models.  In this talk, Dr. Stevenson will share what extreme weather models reveal about megadrought events.

About the Speaker

Dr. Samantha Stevenson is an assistant professor in the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at UC Santa Barbara, where she studies climate change impacts on the tropical Pacific and drought in the southwest US using a combination of ocean and climate models, field observations, and paleoclimate "proxy" reconstructions. She is also affiliated with the Interdepartmental Graduate Program in Marine Sciences, and collaborates closely with the UCSB Geography Department. Prior to this she was a project scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and was an NSF Ocean Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Hawaii-Manoa Department of Oceanography working with Brian Powell.  She completed her PhD at the University of Colorado-Boulder’s Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Department.

Girls Make STEM with Heart
IEEE Buenaventura STEM Event for Middle School Girls
10:00 AM to 2:30 PM
Thousand Oaks

Registration required. Register at www.ieee-bv.org/stem

“Girls Make STEM with Heart”, the IEEE Buenaventura STEM event for middle school girls, will be on Saturday, October 9 at La Reina High School and Middle School in Thousand Oaks. Girls in middle school will become scientists and engineers for a day. They will explore how science, technology, engineering and math can help sustain our planet.

Students can choose from workshops on chemistry, circuits, ham radio, light, robotics, solar energy, or math and numbers; with a focus on how these technologies can be used sustainably.

Parents can attend a concurrent program with a mix of hands on experiences that can be duplicated at home, and will discover the future that awaits their daughters in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The parents program will conclude with a visit to the classrooms to see what the students have learned.

Girls can participate without parents attending. All students will be under the supervision of mentors.

This event is organized by the IEEE Buenaventura Section. The event is supported by women and men in STEM professions and from the IEEE Foundation. Event is free of charge, but capacity is limited. Lunch will be provided.

If you have any questions, please contact stem2021@ieee-bv.org.

Please Note
•  Doors open at 9:30 AM.
•  Masks are required.

Volunteers Needed: FIRST Lego League Robotics Tournament

Once again IEEE Buenaventura Section is supporting middle school robotics by hosting/sponsoring the annual FIRST Lego League Robotics Tournament on Sunday, November 21. There will be 24 teams of young robot enthusiasts that will compete for a chance to go to the regional tournament. The IEEE has been generous in its support over many years both financially and in providing volunteers. It is a lot of fun and you will be greatly impressed with what these young people accomplish and their enthusiasm.

If you are available to volunteer from 8 AM – 4 PM we can definitely use you in a variety of rolls from assisting judges, monitoring the games, and other jobs. If you cannot help on Sunday we will also need some volunteers on Saturday, November 20 from 3 PM – 6 PM to help set up the school.

Please email Bob Rumer <bobrumer@verizon.net> to volunteer or ask questions. Feel free to pass this on to anyone you think might enjoy volunteering.
