Galactic Paleontology with JWST: Finding Living Fossils in the Ancient
Universe
7:30 PM PST
online
Speaker: Chuck Steidel
Announcement/live stream: www.caltech.edu/watson
Description
Since
it began its scientific mission in July 2022, the James Webb Space Telescope
(JWST) has provided the first detailed glimpses of the most distant reaches
of the observable universe, when the first galaxies were emerging more than
13 billion years ago. History suggests that opening new observational windows
leads to entirely unanticipated discoveries, and JWST has already begun to
fulfill that promise. In this lecture, Steidel will explore what enables the
unprecedented power of JWST for studying galaxy formation in its infancy and
what we can expect to learn from JWST images and spectra over the next
several years.

Systems Engineering for Complex Systems

Description
Systems
Engineering is a relatively new discipline of engineering, having only
reached recognizable status within the last 25-30 years, and yet the discipline
has become of extreme importance, especially in the world of today’s complex
systems. It turns out that some industries have been performing “systems
engineering” for years even though they did not call it that; product
engineering, for example, in the automotive industry and commercial
industries, embodies some of the important principles of systems engineering
even though it is not always specified as such. Some of the significant
principles of systems engineering are that it is multi-disciplined, considers
the entire lifecycle of the product or system, and has as its major goal to
strike a design balance between cost, schedule, and performance, and all
within the reasonable risk. This tutorial will delve into all the critical
principles of systems engineering, and provide emphasis on the nuances of
systems engineering that many of the new practitioners tend to overlook, such
as safety, security, producibility, reliability, and similar.

Description
With
the beginning of the year 2023, the California Privacy Rights Act went into
effect. This is a significant landmark of any privacy law in the US setting
the bar high in the privacy regulations for all the other states to follow.
We will review what the new act entails and how is it different from its
predecessor California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). We will also briefly
review some other regulations for Security and Privacy in the US and around
the globe.

Girls in grades 5 to 8 will become
scientists and engineers for a day. They will explore how science,
technology, engineering and math can help sustain our planet. Students can
choose from workshops on chemistry, circuits, gravity, programming, solar
energy, or sound; with a focus on how these technologies can be used
sustainably.
This
event is organized by the IEEE Buenaventura Section, with the gracious hospitality
of Isbell Middle School in Santa Paula. The event is supported by women and
men in STEM professions, IEEE Buenaventura Section, and Techbridge Girls.
Event
is free of charge, but capacity is limited. Lunch will be provided.
