Abstract

Even startups that manage to raise millions in seed funding can crash before they establish themselves as a viable organization if they assemble the wrong team. There is an art and science to selecting the right capable and motivated individuals who collectedly have the most appropriate mix of experience required to optimize decision-making and actions taking in the growing company. Our guest facilitator/speaker will discuss the attributes required of a startup team that ensures a healthy environment. In addition, you will gain insight on how to read the signs signaling team synergy, which in turn reflects the business benefit realization.

Rapid Prototyping with Small Form Factor Arduino Modules for Your Next Automation Project

Pizza and Networking: 6:30 PM
Presentation: 7:00 PM
Speaker: Bridge Carney
Meetings are free and open to the public. Register at www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2017-06-raia

Abstract
Arduino brings new flexibility to engineers, designers & students. Mr. Carney will review the advantages of a snap together system such as Microduino that allows creation of compact technology stacks with the specific functions required greatly reducing the time to create from concept to proof-of-concept.

About the Speaker
Bridge Carney
is worldwide Director of Sales at Microduino in Westlake Village, CA. Mr. Carney started his professional career in civil engineering but moved to microelectronics at the dawn of the PC age. At this time no school courses existed microelectronics and therefore is self-educated in both chip based circuitry and coding. Bridge then transitioned into Marketing with achievements including writing the Marketing specification for the first color impact dot matrix printer and was among the first to use spreadsheets for sales forecast modeling. And in his third professional phase he moved into Sales starting with software applications and then to many types to hardware solutions. Most recently Mr. Carney continued to be associated with a wide range of technologies in both professional and mentoring roles.

Cassini-Huygens Mission to Saturn

Pizza and Networking: 6:30 PM
Presentation: 7:00 PM
Speakers: Trina Ray
Meetings are free and open to the public. Register at www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2017-06-aes

Abstract

The international Cassini-Huygens spacecraft was launched on October 15, 1997 and had a marathon 13-year 2-billion mile journey to the distant planet Saturn.  The 23-foot tall, 14-foot wide, 6-ton spacecraft is the largest most sophisticated outer planet spacecraft ever built, and is in its thirteenth year of operation in orbit around the planet Saturn.  Cassini-Huygens has been returning extraordinary data about the entire Saturn system: the spectacular rings; the numerous icy satellites with a variety of unique surface features; the giant planet itself; a huge magnetosphere teeming with particles that interact with the rings and moons; and the intriguing moon Titan, which is slightly larger than the planet Mercury, and whose hazy atmosphere is denser than that of Earth.  This talk will be a quick overview of the Cassini-Huygens Mission to Saturn, with a summary of the top science returns of its first 13 years in orbit, but really focus on an exciting preview of the upcoming end of mission on September 15, 2017.

About the Speaker
Trina Ray is a senior science systems engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Her first and still favorite experience was working on the Voyager Neptune Encounter in August of 1989. As the co-chair of Titan Orbiter Science Team (TOST), she coordinates all the Titan science opportunities for the Cassini Mission. She is also the Deputy Science Planning and Sequencing Manager for Cassini, which is the group of folks that integrate, implement, and execute the activity plans for all the instruments on Cassini. NASA’s newest flagship mission, a mission to explore Jupiter’s icy moon Europa in the late 2020’s, has hired her as an Investigation Scientist for the ice penetrating radar instrument. Ray received her Bachelor's degree in Physics from California State University, Northridge, and her master's degree in Astronomy from San Diego State University, where her research specialty was Planetary Nebulae. Ray has received numerous awards, including a NASA medal for Exceptional Service and is an active public speaker for NASA and JPL.
