Upcoming Community Events on SpaceFebruary 5, 2019 Scholars discuss the historical context and the science behind the daring odyssey of Apollo 8 around the moon and back. Panelists include Cal Lutheran President Chris Kimball (History), Professor Mary Oksala (Physics) and Michael H. Gorn, a historian of aeronautics and author of the new book Spacecraft: 100 Iconic Rockets, Shuttles, and Satellites That Put Us in Space. There will be a book signing starting at 8:30 PM with Michael Gorn. Free admission. www.callutheran.edu/calendar/event/4440#event April 7, 2019 New York Times Bestseller, Robert Kurson (Shadow Divers and Pirate Hunters), talks about the incredibly dangerous flight of the Apollo 8 mission with Cal Lutheran President, Chris Kimball. Set amidst a backdrop of political and social unrest in 1968, the dedicated men and women of NASA look less like heroes and more like miracle workers as they beat impossible odds to get the spacecraft in the air – and around the moon – successfully in just four months. Admission
is free but tickets are required. Tickets available at the Thousand Oaks
Grant R. Brimhall Library and the Newbury Park Library starting in mid-March. Thousand Oaks Reads. One City, One Book. Rocket Men: The Daring Odyssey of Apollo 8 and the Astronauts Who Made Man's First Journey to the Moon, by Robert Kurson. Thousand Oaks Reads: One City, One Book is a citywide literary event and series of supporting activities encouraging community members to read and discuss the same book. A driving notion of the program is: When we open a book together, we close it in greater harmony.
