The Balanced Interface

Pizza and Networking:  6:30 PM
Presentation:  7:00 PM
Presenter:  Bill Whitlock
Meetings are free and open to the public.  Please RSVP to mnicholls@ieee-bv.org

Abstract
The Balanced Interface.  Although it’s perhaps the most powerful tool we have to preserve signal integrity in systems, myths about its design and application abound and even appear in many textbooks.  However, challenging traditional views has created a few disagreements over the years, but Bill Witlock’s logical evidence-based arguments have always prevailed.  The presentation will draw on 40 years of experience in professional audio, the last 25 specializing in interfacing and grounding issues, to dispel the myths and misconceptions.  Basic theory will be briefly reviewed and results of recent research reviewed.  Several real-world examples of how new strategies based on this research have solved long-standing problems.

About the Speaker
Bill Whitlock has held circuit and system design positions at Quad-Eight (recording console maker), Laserium (laser light show producer), Capitol Records, and Jensen Transformers. He holds 5 patents and is a Life Fellow of the Audio Engineering Society and a Life Senior member of IEEE. He has authored several book chapters and numerous magazine articles, contributed to several AES and IEC standards, lectured at many universities (including MIT), and is a popular teacher at AV industry trade shows. He is now a consultant and lives in Oxnard, CA.

Are the Machines Learning?

Pizza and Networking:  6:30 PM
Presentation:  7:00 PM
Presenter:  Karl Geiger, Chief Software Architect, Neural ID
Meetings are free and open to the public.  Please register at the link below:
http://are-machines-learning.eventbrite.com/

Abstract
Golem or just a better mental grasp? The popular press, writers, and several leading technologists have been making headlines with fears of AIs ruling the earth and humanity. But are the machines truly learning, or are we merely programming and training them to do more sophisticated data processing? This talk presents a brief overview of machine learning techniques, then sets these applications in real-world contexts. As with any new tool, we have more to fear from human mis-application and mis-apprehension of these tools than from the tools themselves.

About the Speaker
Karl Geiger is Chief Software Architect at Neural ID in Redwood, CA and works on an analytics software platform, with a neural network architecture, that learns through an expert system with machine learning, recognizes critical patterns, and informs Business Intelligence Analytics centers.

Karl has been one of the most impactful Section Chairs of the Buenaventura Section and very active with IEEE from 2009 to 2013, and chaired the IEEE Los Angeles Council from 2012-2013. He retired in 2009 to work pro-bono full time with the IEEE, local start-up companies such as Cure Pharmaceutical, InClinical, MCI START, lectured at local colleges, supported the Moorpark College Engineering Club, Ventura County schools competitions and the national champion Moorpark High School Academic Decathlon team in which his three children competed state-wide and nationally.

Karl founded Convergent Informatics, Inc., with three Amgen colleagues in 2008. Customers included biotech companies such as Kythera Biopharmaceuticals, an eCommerce businesses, and other start-up businesses along the 101 corridor in Ventura and Los Angeles Counties. Karl also worked with the local venture communities, reviewed pitches and coached entrepreneurs. Prior to Convergent, Karl was the Director of Enterprise Architecture at Amgen, Inc., where his teams designed and documented several enterprise-class information systems.

His technical interests include machine intelligence, information retrieval, database systems, human factors engineering, software test and development to support regulatory compliance, and making fun toys for the web (http://www.businessbuzzwordbingo.com/).

The Next Wave of LTE-Advanced Complexity for Mobile User Equipment: Uplink Carrier Aggregation, Dual Connectivity, and Tx Diversity

Pizza and Networking:  6:30 PM
Presentation:  7:00 PM
Presenter:  David Pehlke, Skyworks
Meetings are free and open to the public.  Please register at the link below:
https://meetings.vtools.ieee.org/m/34858

Abstract
LTE-Advanced was introduced in release 10 of the 3GPP spec for LTE in order to get closer to the aggressive cellular data rate targets of the strict 4G technology definition of the ITU, namely 1GB/s data rates for the downlink. This presentation will introduce this carrier aggregation feature of LTE-Advanced and the specifics of interband CA vs. contiguous vs. non-contiguous intraband CA, 3CA Downlink, and uplink contiguous intraband and interband UL CA. Implications for the radio architecture and performance challenges of CA, as well as the test and validation conformance requirements will be detailed.

When the system uses TX diversity, the same data is transmitted redundantly by more than one antenna and this increases the signal-to-noise ratio. Space- time codes are used to generate a redundant signal. There are different UL Tx Diversity approaches for LTE-Advanced Mobile User Equipment.

About the Speaker
David Pehlke
received his Ph.D. and M.S.E. from the University of Michigan and S.B.E.E  from M.I.T. and is director of the Systems Engineering team for the Advanced Mobile Solutions division of Skyworks in Newbury Park. He serves as patent liaison for the AMS division, and has 31 patents issued with more pending. He is an IEEE Senior member and presently chairs the IEEE Buenaventura Communications Society.

Spring Mixer a Rousing Success

Sixty-two IEEE members and guests attended the May 14 Spring mixer, “Rising Stars and Old Nebulas”, at the Huddle Entrepreneurship Center in Westlake Village.

In an atmosphere of camaraderie, we gathered in the heart of the Huddle Entrepreneurship Center, a local startup heaven and a bit of “Google” type creative environment here in the Conejo Valley. The energy was high and networking at its best. Nursing a glass of wine and savoring French hors d’oeuvres, the audience enjoyed Zak Cohen’s insights into the patent of blue jeans by Levi Strauss 142 years ago and how the jeans symbol evolved over time, becoming an essential element in the California entrepreneurial culture of creativity and inventiveness.
