New Frontiers in Terahertz Technology

Pizza and Networking:  6:30 PM
Presentation:  7:00 PM
Presenter:  Mona Jarrahi, Ph.D., UCLA
Meeting is free and open to the public.  Please register at the link below:
http://www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2015-09-com

Abstract
Although unique potentials of terahertz waves for chemical identification, material characterization, biological sensing, and medical imaging have been recognized for quite a while, the relatively poor performance, higher costs, and bulky nature of current terahertz systems continue to impede their deployment in field settings. In this talk, I will describe some of our recent results on developing fundamentally new terahertz electronic/optoelectronic components and imaging/spectrometry architectures to mitigate performance limitations of existing terahertz systems. In specific, I will introduce new designs of high-performance photoconductive terahertz sources that utilize plasmonic antennas to offer terahertz radiation at record-high power levels of several milliwatts - demonstrating more than three orders of magnitude increase compared to the state of the art. I will describe that the unique capabilities of these plasmonic antennas can be further extended to develop terahertz detectors and heterodyne spectrometers with single-photon detection sensitivities over a broad terahertz bandwidth at room temperatures, which has not been possible through existing technologies. To achieve this significant performance improvement, plasmonic antennas and device architectures are optimized for operation at telecommunication wavelengths, where very high power, narrow linewidth, wavelength tunable, compact and cost-effective optical sources are commercially available. Therefore, our results pave the way to compact and low-cost terahertz sources, detectors, and spectrometers that could offer numerous opportunities for e.g., medical imaging and diagnostics, atmospheric sensing, pharmaceutical quality control, and security screening systems. And finally, I will briefly highlight our research activities on development of new types of high-performance terahertz passive components (e.g., modulators, tunable filters, and beam deflectors) based on novel reconfigurable meta-films.

About the Speaker
Dr. Mona Jarrahi received her B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology in 2000 and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 2003 and 2007. She served as a Postdoctoral Scholar at University of California Berkeley from 2007 to 2008. After serving as an Assistant Professor at University of Michigan Ann Arbor, she joined University of California Los Angeles in 2013 as an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and the Director of the Terahertz Electronics Laboratory. Her research group focuses on Terahertz, Millimeter-Wave Electronics and Optoelectronics; Imaging and Spectroscopy Systems; and Microwave Photonics. Prof. Jarrahi has made significant contributions to the development of ultrafast electronic and optoelectronic devices and integrated systems for terahertz and millimeter-wave sensing, imaging, computing, and communication systems by utilizing novel materials, nanostructures, and quantum well structures as well as innovative plasmonic and optical concepts. Optimizing Decoupling Capacitors and Troubleshooting Power Integrity Issues in FPGA Applications

Pizza and Networking:  6:30 PM
Presentation:  7:00 PM
Presenter:  Cosmin Iorga, Inphi Corporation
Meeting is free and open to the public.  Please register at the link below:
http://www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2015-09-edcas

Abstract
This presentation will start with an overview of power delivery networks (PDN) in die, package, and PCB structures.  The fundamental concepts will be explained from intuitive and analytical perspectives.  The attention will then focus on the specifics of power delivery in FPGA applications and in particular the selection of power supply decoupling capacitors.  Optimization of decoupling capacitors through on-die measurement of PDN impedance frequency profile is performed by configuring and using only logic blocks commonly available in existing FPGAs without the need of external test instruments.  A case study implemented in a Spartan 3A FPGA has been able to measure the PDN impedance frequency profile at frequencies up to 500MHz and has identified resonance peaks not seen by board level measurements.  Further application of the on-die PDN impedance measurement to troubleshooting power integrity issues will be presented and case studies will be analyzed.  The presentation will conclude with a discussion of challenges in power delivery network design and validation in advanced multi-die, silicon interposer, and stacked-die 3D FPGAs.

About the Speaker
Cosmin Iorga is a Principal Design Engineer at Inphi Corporation and a part time instructor at UCLA Extension.  Cosmin brings combined expertise in CMOS and BiCMOS high-speed analog integrated circuit design, signal integrity, power integrity, and noise coupling suppression at die, package, and board levels, with more than 20 years of experience.  Cosmin has earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, and he holds nine patents covering innovative solutions in circuit design, noise coupling reduction, and signal integrity.  Cosmin is the author of the book Noise Coupling in Integrated Circuits: A Practical Approach to Analysis, Modeling, and Suppression.

GLOBECOM 2015 is one of two flagship conferences of the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc), together with IEEE ICC. IEEE GLOBECOM is a five-day event.  Two days are dedicated to tutorials and workshops, while the remaining three days are dedicated to the industry forum and exhibition (IF&E) program and the technical symposia.  The program of the technical symposia includes oral or poster presentations of about 1000 scientific papers, grouped into 12 thematic symposia, and more than 15 parallel sessions.  In addition to the technical program, IEEE GLOBECOM 2015 will feature an IF&E program, including industry-focused workshops, tutorials, keynote talks from industrial leaders, panel discussions, a large exposition, and business and industrial forums.
